Wrap Around the World｜#3 Zen for the Loner

백남준 탄생 90주년을 기념하며,

1988년 전 세계 인류에게 평화와 소통의 메시지를 보낸 백남준의 위성프로젝트 "Wrap Around the World"에 화답하고자,
2022년 한국의 예술가들이 시공간을 초월하는 평화와 안녕의 메시지를 다시 한번 쏘아 올립니다!

이날치, DJ진욱, 사운드아티스트 정진화, 엘트라바이 박소희, 해파리 박민희가 함께하는 이번 "Wrap Around the World" 시리즈에서는 한국 최전선의 크리에이티브 미디어 콘텐츠를 만날 수 있습니다.

제 3편 ‘고요를 위한 선(Zen for the Loner)’에는 다큐멘터리 "백남준-아방가르드는 당당하다"(1977)에서 백남준이 바이올린에 줄을 매달아 바닥에 끌고 다니는 "걸음을 위한 선: 바이올린 끌기"(연도미상) 퍼포먼스 장면이 들어 있습니다.

백남준은 활로 현을 켜는 바이올린의 규정 연주법을 탈피하여 나무라는 재료가 세상과 만나는 본연의 소리로 음악을 만들었는데요.

‘고요를 위한 선’은 그가 드론으로 환생한 모습을 상상하며 광활한 자연 속 홀로 드론에 매달려 유유히 지나가는 신발을 통해 자신만의 방향으로 길을 개척해 나가던 백남준의 작업의 여정을 보여주고자 합니다.

영상 속 소리는 사운드 아티스트 정진화의 작품으로 고요 속에서 비로소 들리는 백색 소음, 자연과 신발이 마찰하는 소리는 그 여로를 따라가 볼 수 있게 해줍니다.

In celebration of the 90th anniversary of Nam June Paik’s birth,
and in memory of his 1988 television special ‘Wrap Around the World’—which delivered a message of peace and communication to all humanity—
the KF and Korean artists transcend time and space to once again deliver his message of harmony to the world!

The ‘Wrap Around the World’ YouTube series introduces some of Korea’s leading artists and entertainers, including LEENALCHI, DJ Jinwook, Jeong Jinhwa the sound artist, Sohee Park from Elltravaille, and HAEPAARY member Minhee Park.

The third episode, ‘Zen for the Loner,’ includes a piece of performance art named ‘Zen for Walking; Action with Violin on a String(n.d.)’ from the documentary ‘Das gute Gewissen der Avantgarde(1977),’ where Nam June Paik ties a string to a violin and pulls it behind himself.

He broke the convention of playing the violin with a bow, instead producing music with the natural sound of the wooden material itself.

This episode attempts to recapture Nam June Paik’s own method of artistic expression by tying a shoe to a drone, which is suspended over a seemingly endless expanse of natural scenery far below, as if it is a reincarnation of Nam June Paik himself.

The audio in the video is the work of sound artist Jeong Jinhwa. The white noise contrasted against the sound of the shoe is meant to evoke a journey through Nam June Paik’s artwork.
