작업 소개

57STUDIO는 국립무용단의 대표작 《항연》의 미니멀하면서도 강렬한 무대 언어에서 영감을 받아, 스팟 영상과 공연 기록 영상, 그리고 공연 소품을 중심으로 한 하이라이트 영상을 기획 및 제작하였습니다.

스팟 영상은 종묘제례의 시작을 알리는 편경 소리와 춤의 흐름을 담아내어, 공연의 분위기를 간결하게 전달하였고, 공연 기록 영상은 무대의 전통미와 감동을 세심하게 포착하여 극장 밖에서도 《항연》의 핵심을 경험할 수 있도록 구성하였습니다.

또한, 공연에 사용된 주요 소품을 중심으로 사계절의 공연 구성을 설명하고, 각 장면의 하이라이트를 엮은 별도의 영상도 제작하여, 《항연》의 상징성과 구조를 시청각적으로 이해할 수 있도록 하였습니다.

57STUDIO was inspired by the minimalist yet powerful stage language of the National Dance Company’s signature performance, The Banquet, and planned and produced a series of videos, including a teaser, a performance recording, and a highlight reel focused on key stage props.

The teaser video captures the tone of the performance through the sound of the pyeongyeong—an instrument traditionally used to open the Jongmyo ritual—and the flowing movement of the dancers, offering a concise yet evocative glimpse into the production.

The performance documentation meticulously conveys the elegance and emotional resonance of the traditional stage, allowing audiences to experience the essence of The Banquet even outside the theater.

Additionally, a separate highlight video was produced to visually explain the four-season structure of the performance, centered around symbolic stage props. This piece helps viewers gain a deeper understanding of The Banquet’s symbolic language and compositional framework.

〈향연>은 궁중정재부터 종교제례, 민속무용까지 한국춤의 과거와 현재를 담은 무대다. 기품 있는 궁중무인 전폐희문, 불교 의식무인 승무, 여성 민속춤의 대명사인 장고춤 등 한국무용을 총망라해 선보인다. 특히, 56명의 무용수가 선보이는 신태평무는 무대의 백미라 할 수 있다. 전통을 기본으로 한 창작무대를 표방하는 국립무용단과 전통은 창작의 보고(화)라 생각하는 디자이너 정구호와의 세 번째 만남으로 정갈함 속에서 중폭되는 한국무용의 미학을 맛볼 수 있다. 스타일리시한 한국 춤이 <묵향>이었다면 〈향연》은 격조 높은 한국 춤이라 할 수 있다. 《향연》은 고고하고 품격 있는 선비의 정신을 담고 있다. 선비들이 즐겨했던 문인화에 담겨진 절제미, 여백미를 이 시대의 모던함으로 무대 위에 옮겨 놓고자 한다. 급변하는 세상의 속도에 길들여진 현대인들에게 지금껏 맛보지 못했던 진정한 멋스러움을 전하고자 한다.

The Banquet is a stage that encapsulates the past and present of Korean dance—from royal court performances to religious rituals and folk traditions. The production includes a comprehensive repertoire of Korean dance, such as the stately court dance Jeonpaeheemun, the Buddhist ritual dance Seungmu, and the iconic women’s folk dance Janggu-chum. One of the highlights is the grand presentation of Shin Taepyeongmu, performed by 56 dancers.

This is the third collaboration between the National Dance Company of Korea—known for creative productions rooted in tradition—and designer Jung Kuho, who views tradition as a wellspring of artistic inspiration. Together, they present a refined aesthetic that deepens the beauty of Korean dance. If Scent of Ink expressed stylish Korean dance, The Banquet embodies elegance and dignity. The production channels the noble spirit of the seonbi (virtuous scholars) and translates the restrained beauty and refined void of traditional literati paintings into a modern stage experience.
