BreAking is a dance film based on the work of the same name by choreographer Kyung-eun Lee, produced through the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s “Dance on Air” series commission. Choreography was done by Kyung-eun Lee, directed by 57STUDIO, and the music was a collaboration between Jang Young-gyu and Yeong Die.

Set against the backdrop of urban Seoul and abandoned buildings in Gangwon-do, this film captures a journey of discovering one’s true self through movements that transcend time and space. The film beautifully conveys a dance that expresses the coexistence of contrasting elements such as light and darkness, child and adult, and closure and openness, accompanied by unique music and stunning visuals.

This film was selected and screened at the 2022 SAN FRANCISCO DANCE FILM FESTIVAL and the 2022 Dance Camera West Film Festival.

“Don’t fit myself into the world. Let the world fit into me!”
What choreographer Lee Kyungeun thinks ‘to be myself’ is to show my individuality and create my own world actively instead of keeping myself confined in the systems and limits of the world. The ‘innocence’ of children discovered during the journey of ‘being true to myself’ is the state of seeing everything newly and marvelously and having the freedom to enjoy every moment. In a space where light and darkness coexist, director Lee Miji presents a stage in which dancers pass, rearrange and mix everything in their own rhythms. The work portrays individuals who imagine, play and reconstruct the world while turning a dichotomous space into a space of diversity.

In this collection of mid-length works, surreal stories and dreamlike encounters are punctuated by unexpected moments and colorful characters
In this collection of mid-length works, surreal narratives and dreamlike encounters are punctuated by unexpected moments and many quirky characters along the way. In the well titled A Perpetual State of What the F#@k!!?? (Australia, 2021), wandering children attempt to confront the sometimes ridiculous negligence of the generation before them. In Rekonstruktio (Finland, 2021), two old school friends revisit their past in a playful film where the retro architectural setting and quirky sound design make the viewer want to be a part of their world.
