작업 소개

57STUDIO는 2019년 서울문화재단 최초예술지원사업에 선정되어 자체 기획한 LENZ Magazine Project를 진행하였습니다. LENZ는 텍스트를 청각과 시각으로 확장하여 새로운 해석과 감각적 접근을 제안하는 Audio Visual Magazine입니다.

이 프로젝트는 텍스트를 선정하고 이를 다양한 방식으로 해석하며, 텍스트에서 시작되는 텍스처(Text-ure)를 탐구하는 과정으로 이루어졌습니다.

두 번째 텍스처는 SBS문화재단과 국립현대미술관이 공동 운영하는 <올해의 작가상>에서 2019 올해의 작가로 선정된 이주요 작가의 프로젝트 LOVE YOUR DEPOT 입니다.

이주요 작가는 전시장에 거대한 창고를 세우며, “전시 이후 작품들은 어디로 가는가?” 라는 질문을 던집니다.이에 대해 참여 작가들과 LOVE YOUR DEPOT 멤버들, 그리고 이주요 작가가 함께 대화를 나눕니다.

첫 번째 에피소드는 전시장 곳곳에 빛과 중앙의 탑 프레임을 쌓아올린 정지현 작가와 이야기를 나눕니다. 그가 남긴 손길과 작업 과정, 그리고 이주요 작가와의 인연을 이야기하며, 전시가 끝난 후 작품이 어떤 방식으로 존재하고 보존되며, 그 가치는 어떻게 이어지는지에 대해 함께 고민해봅니다.

57STUDIO was selected for the 2019 Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s First Arts Support Project and carried out the LENZ Magazine Project. LENZ is an Audio-Visual Magazine that expands text into auditory and visual forms, proposing new interpretations and sensory approaches.

This project involved selecting texts and interpreting them in various ways, exploring the texture that emerges from these texts.

The second texture comes from LOVE YOUR DEPOT, a project by artist Jewyo Rhii, who was selected as the 2019 Artist of the Year by the SBS Cultural Foundation and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Jewyo Rhii constructs a massive warehouse in the exhibition space, posing the question: “After the show, where do the works go?” A conversation unfolds among participating artists, members of LOVE YOUR DEPOT, and Jewyo Rhii about this question.

The first episode features a conversation with Jeong Ji-hyun, the artist who created the light installations and built the central tower frame throughout the exhibition space. He discusses the process and touches left behind in his work, as well as his connection with artist Jewyo Rhii. Together, they reflect on how the artwork exists, is preserved, and how its value continues after the exhibition has ended.

Audio Visual Magazine LENZ. 지금부터 시작합니다.

MeeJee Lee: In dramas or movies, there are never just one or two main characters. From supporting characters that help develop the story to background extras like “Pedestrian 1” and “Pedestrian 2,” it’s these lesser roles that make the story richer and more complete. Although our attention as viewers is focused on the protagonist, every character on screen has a name and an unseen life story. The same goes for the artworks we pass by in the museum. After they are created and displayed, what stories do these countless artworks hold, and where do they go? Welcome to Audio Visual Magazine LENZ. Let’s begin now.

정지현 : 안녕하세요. 정지현입니다.

이미지 : 지현씨. 오랜만입니다. 지현씨의 최근 작업들을 보니까 정말 다양하게 작업을 하셨어요. 제가 특징 있게 본 게 미술관 안에서만 활동하신 게 아니라, 2019년에는 유독 미술관 밖에서도 활동을 좀 하신 거 같아요. 진행하신 작업들 간략하게 소개를 부탁드려도 될까요?

정지현 : 2019년에는 크게 세 가지로 작업을 진행했었는데요. 크게는 개인전 <다목적 헨리>. 아틀리에 에르메스에서 전시를 진행했고. 이 <다목적 헨리>는 간단하게 얘기하긴 어려운데, 이 헨리는 ‘헨리 무어’의 이름을 딴 제목이에요. 그래서 헨리 무어, 영국의 조각가 헨리 무어의 작업과 뭐 관련된 전시는 아니고, 헨리 무어 풍의 공공미술이 우리 도시에 많이 산재해 있다,라는 어떤 재미난 생각이 아니라 실제 그렇죠. 특히 제 작업실 주변에 있는 공공 조각 같은 거에 헨리 무어와 비슷한 작업들이 많이 있어서, 그것이 재밌다고 생각해서 거기서부터 시작한 전시고요.

그다음에 문화 비축기지 서울 <빅 서비스> 같은 경우는 그 이전에 이제 <타원 본부>라는 서울 공공미술 프로젝트를 크게 진행했는데. <빅 서비스>부터 먼저 설명하자면 큰 탁구대를 만드는 거예요. 이곳은 전시장이 아니라 공원화된, 리모델링된 그런 곳인데. 원래는 이곳이 석유를 보관하던, 그래서 시민들이 갈 수 없는 1급 비밀 시설 같은 데었는데. 2002년 월드컵 이후로 석유를 비축하던 그 기지가 공원화되면서 다시 리모델링된 새로운 공간인데. 이곳에서 전시 제안을 받아서, 어떤 미술품이라기보다 사람들이 함께 놀 수 있는 그런 작품을 하고 싶다 생각해서. 큰 탁구대를 만든 제목이 <빅 서비스>인 그런 작업이고요.

<타원 본부> 같은 경우에는 이건 서울시민 아이디어 프로젝트라고 해서, 먼저 제안이 왔고 프로젝트 공모를 지원해서 당선이 된 케이스인데. 시민들의 아이디어를 공모를 해서 그 이야기를 바탕으로 공공미술을 제작하는 그런 작업이었습니다. 위치는 중랑구의 용마 폭포공원이라는 곳에 있어요.

MeeJee Lee: Today, we have a panelist joining us for this conversation. Recently, you’ve been involved in a variety of projects, including the solo exhibition Multi-purpose Henry at Atelier Hermes in 2019, Misaligned Growth Points at the Literature Storage Base in Seoul, and Big Service at the Oval Headquarters public art project in Seoul. You’ve been presenting works that span across the spectrum of the white cube and beyond. We are here with the artist Jeong Ji-hyun. Hello, Ji-hyun. Could you please greet our listeners?

Jeong Ji-hyun: Hello, I’m Jeong Ji-hyun.

MeeJee Lee: It’s been a while, Ji-hyun! Looking at your recent works, I can see you’ve been really diverse in your practice. One thing that stands out is that you’ve been active not just inside galleries, but also outside of them in 2019. Could you briefly introduce the projects you’ve been working on?

Jeong Ji-hyun: In 2019, I worked on three major projects. The first was the solo exhibition Multi-purpose Henry at Atelier Hermes. Multi-purpose Henry is a title that’s not so easy to explain simply. The title comes from “Henry Moore,” the famous British sculptor. However, the exhibition isn’t directly related to Henry Moore’s work. It’s more about how public art in our city, especially sculptures, resemble the style of Henry Moore. Interestingly, there are many public sculptures around my studio that bear a strong resemblance to his work, and I found that amusing, which is how the idea for the exhibition began.

Next, I worked on Big Service at the Culture Storage Base in Seoul. Before that, I had done a public art project called Oval Headquarters as part of the Seoul Public Art Project. Big Service was created in a remodeled space, which used to be a secret facility where oil was stored. After the 2002 World Cup, the site was transformed into a public park. For this project, rather than presenting an art piece in a conventional gallery, I wanted to create something interactive and fun for the public. So, I made a large ping-pong table, and the title of the work was Big Service.

Lastly, Oval Headquarters was a project that came from the Seoul Citizens’ Idea Project. I applied for a public art competition based on citizens’ ideas and won the selection. It involved creating public art based on ideas submitted by citizens. The project is located in Yongma Falls Park in Jungnang-gu.

이미지 : 저는 작품 사진들을. 제 여기 용마 공원은 직접 가보지는 못했는데. 작품 사진들을 보고 깜짝 놀랐어요. 이거 진짜 폭포인데. 너무 이렇게 장관이다 보니까. 달력 사진 같기도 하고. 약간, 와 이거 여름에 가봐야겠다,라는 생각을 좀 했거든요. 물이 시원하게 떨어지니까.

사진들을 보다 보니까, 주요리 얼굴이 여기 곳곳에 계시더라고요. <빅 서비스> 때도 그렇고. 사실 이번 회차를 준비하면서 패널로 지현 씨와 함께 하고 싶다,라고 생각했던 가장 큰 이유가 주요리와 작업 활동의 교차점이 많으시더라고요. 한 몇 년 전에 같이 작업했던 적이 있었던 거 같아요. 그래서 주요리를 언제 처음 만나셨나요?

정지현 : 2015년도에 제가 두산 레지던시라는 프로그램으로 뉴욕에 가게 되었었는데. 당시에 저도 주요리라고 불러야 되나요? 아무튼 이주요 작가님께서 퀸즈 뮤지엄에 개인전을 열고 있었어요. 그래서 뭐 할 것도 없고 해서 전시나 보러 가자, 해서 갔는데 마침 거기서 만나게 되었고. 그때 인연이 닿아서. 또 마침 그때 곧 작품을 고치고 계셨어요. 지금 여기도 있고. 그 이번 전시에 선생님의 얼굴이 나오는 대신에 돌아가고 있는 그 렉처 머신을 제가 작품을 고치는 걸 도와드리게 됐어요. 그래서 그걸 도와드리면서 인연이 더 이루어졌고, 그러면서 다른 작가들도 초대가 되어서 그곳에서 이제 같이 퍼포먼스 작업을 진행하게 되었는데, 그것이 이제 <도운 브레익스>라는 프로젝트로 연장이 돼서 2년간 같이 활동을 했었죠.

이미지 : 함께 전시를 하시면서 대화를 되게 많이 나누셨을 것 같아요. 작업 사진들을 보니까 서로 되게 유기적인 영향을 많이 주고받았겠구나,라는 생각을 했었거든요. 그래서 더욱더 이번 녹음에 지현씨의 도움이 절실해서, 이렇게 요청을 드렸죠. 함께해 주셔서 감사합니다.

MeeJee Lee: I saw photos of the artwork, and I was really surprised. I haven’t been to Yongma Park myself, but seeing the photos, I was amazed. It’s a real waterfall, and the view is so grand that it almost looks like a calendar photo. I thought, “I really need to go this summer.” The water cascading down is so refreshing.

As I looked through the photos, I noticed Jewyo Rhii’s face appearing here and there. Even in Big Service. The main reason I wanted to have Ji-hyun Jeong as a panelist for this episode is because of the many intersections in their work activities. I think I worked with Jewyo Rhii a few years ago. When did you first meet Jewyo Rhii?

Ji-hyun Jeong: In 2015, I went to New York through the Doosan Residency program. At that time, Jewyo Rhii was holding a solo exhibition at the Queens Museum. I had nothing to do, so I decided to go see the exhibition, and that’s where I met him. We connected at that time. Interestingly, he was also fixing some of his works then, and I helped him with that. One of the pieces that’s featured in this exhibition is a lecture machine, and I helped him fix it. Through this, our connection grew, and other artists were invited to join as well. We ended up working on the project Dawn Breaks, which continued for two years.

MeeJee Lee: It must have been a lot of discussions as you worked on the exhibition together. Looking at the photos of the works, it seemed like you two had a lot of organic influence on each other. That’s why I really wanted Ji-hyun Jeong’s help with this recording. Thank you so much for being here.

찰스 에셔는 영국 출신 큐레이터로 현재 네덜란드에 위치한 반 아베 미술관(Van Abbe museun)의 디렉터이자, 미술 전문 잡지 Afterall의 공동 편집자로 활동하고 있습니다. 2005년 이스탄불 비엔날레 큐레이터, 2002년에는 성완경, 후한루와 함께 광주비엔날레 큐레이터를 맡았고, 2014년 31회 상파울루 비엔날레 큐레이터 Arthub Asia의 네 번째 디렉처로 임명되어 미술계의 관심을 받았습니다. 찰스 에셔은 획일화된 미술 제도와 기관에 대해 비판적인 입장을 취하고 있는 대표적인 크리에이터 중 한 사람으로, 반아베 미술관 디렉터를 맡으면서 적극적으로 기관과 제도의 한계성에 대해 비판적인 입장을 가시화할 수 있는 실험을 하고 있습니다. 찰스 에셔는 고민과 방향이 어떻게 전시로 구현되는지, 그리고 발전되는지를 보여주는 살아있는 미술관이 되기 위한 좋은 전시 기획으로 많은 예술인들에게 롤 모델로 회자되고 있습니다. 이런 분이 적어 주신 글. <전시 이후, 작품은 어디로 가는가?> 잠시 들어보시겠습니다.

MeeJee Lee: Today’s recording is about Love Your Depot, an exhibition by Jewyo Rhii featured in the 2019 Artist of the Year exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Before we dive into the exhibition discussion, as LENZ imagines text through both auditory and visual means, let me first introduce today’s text. The text for today is After the Show, Where Do the Works Go? by Charles Esche. First, let me briefly introduce Charles Esche. I’ll be referencing a passage from meetingroom editor Hong Ji’s writing to introduce Charles Esche (b. 1962).

Charles Esche is a British curator currently serving as the director of the Van Abbe Museum in the Netherlands and is a co-editor of the art journal Afterall. He was the curator of the 2005 Istanbul Biennale and, in 2002, co-curated the Gwangju Biennale with artists Seong Wan-kyung and Hu Fanlu. He also served as the curator of the 31st São Paulo Biennale in 2014 and as the director of Arthub Asia’s fourth edition. Esche is known as a critical figure in the art world, particularly for his stance against standardized art institutions and systems. As the director of the Van Abbe Museum, he has been involved in experimental work that critiques the limitations of institutions and systems. Charles Esche is widely regarded as a role model for many artists for how his reflections and direction manifest in exhibitions, demonstrating how exhibitions evolve and grow.

Let’s listen now to the text, After the Show, Where Do the Works Go? written by this influential figure.

첫 문장이 굉장히 강렬해요. 작품은 사람이 아니다. 이 글을 읽으면서 우리가 작품이라고 부르는 것의 의미를 생각하게 되었어요. 지현씨는 혹시 찰스 에셔를 아시나요?

정지현 : 네.

이미지 : 아, 역시.

정지현 : 직접적으로 알지는 못하고요. 제가 연예인을 아는 것처럼, 찰스 에셔를 알고 있다는 말이죠.

이미지 : 사실 이 글은 올해의 작가상 도록의 이주요 작가상 파트의 글이기도 해요. 그래서 여기서 이 글을 보면서 너무 인상 깊었던 부분들을 바탕으로 이번 회차를 녹음하게 되었는데요. 지현씨는 첫 작품 혹시 기억하시나요? 언제 첫 작품을 만드셨나요.

정지현 : 음… 첫 작품이라면 졸업 전시 때. 작업실 천장 위에, 제가 대학교 때 온갖 만들고 실패하고 이런 것들을 다 모아다가 천장 위에 올려놨어요. 그 작품이 생각나네요.

이미지 : 사실, 지현씨랑 제가 학교 동기거든요. 그래서 제가 기억하기로는 졸업전시에 보여주신 작품들은, 한 몇 년 전에 저희 수업의 일환에서 그 작품을 제작하고 발표하는 수업에서도 제가 봤던 기억이 나는 거예요. 근데 그때의 그 작품이 아닌 이 졸업전시를 첫 작품으로 기억하시는 이유가 있으신가요?

정지현 : 왜냐하면 처음으로 이제 제가 생각하지 않은 관객을 만나는 그런 시간이었고 오피셜 하게 외부로 제가 작업을 했습니다,라고 알리는 첫 번째 전시였고. 그래서 뭐, 그 이전에도 사실 학교 안에서 나름대로 개인전을 한다고 이제 이것저것 많이 했었어요. 전시 나름의 개인전과 과제전 이런 것도 있었겠지만 그래도 새로운 바깥으로 보여준다, 내가 퍼블릭에 공개한다고 제대로 마음먹었던 것, 준비를 단단하게 했던 것이 졸업 전시였던 것 같아요.

MeeJee Lee: Charles Esche’s writing, After the Show, Where Do the Works Go? starts with a very strong statement: “A work of art is not a person.” Reading this, it really made me reflect on what we even mean by the term ‘artwork.’ Do you know Charles Esche, Ji-hyun?

Jeong Ji-hyun: Yes.

MeeJee Lee: Ah, I figured.

Jeong Ji-hyun: Not personally, though. It’s more like how you know a celebrity; I know of Charles Esche.

MeeJee Lee: Actually, this text is also part of the Artist of the Year catalogue for Jewyo Rhii’s segment. As I was reading it, I found it really inspiring, and it’s what led to this recording session. By the way, Ji-hyun, do you remember your first piece of artwork? When did you first create something?

Jeong Ji-hyun: Well… my first piece would have been during my graduation exhibition. I put all the things I had made and failed at during college up on the ceiling of my studio. That’s the piece I remember.

MeeJee Lee: Actually, Ji-hyun and I are schoolmates. So, I recall seeing that piece during one of our courses where we made and presented our works a few years ago. But I’m curious—why do you remember the graduation exhibition as your first piece, instead of the work from that class?

Jeong Ji-hyun: Because it was the first time I met an audience I hadn’t anticipated. It was my first official exhibition where I publicly announced, “This is my work!” So, while I had done small exhibitions inside the school, like personal and assignment exhibitions, the graduation exhibition was the first time I truly prepared to show something to the outside world, to the public. It felt like a solid, meaningful first step.

이미지 : 맞아요 이 전시 전과 후에 어떤 달라진 점을 느끼셨나요?

정지현 : 그렇죠. 왜냐면 이제 보통 미대생들은 대학을 졸업하고 나서는 더 이상 학교에 도움을 받거나, 그런 케어를 받는 것이 아니라. 이제 각자 알아서 살아남아야 되는 그런 길을 가게 될 텐데. 저는 그래도 운이 좋은 케이스라고 할 수도 있는게, 이 전시 졸업 전시를 하고 나서 대안공간 사루비아 다방에 기획 공모를 넣었는데 되었고. 그 바로 비슷한 시기에 상업 갤러리한테 컨택이 와서 한번 개인전을 할 수 있는 기회가 있었어요. 그래서 두 군데 운 좋게 곧바로 1년 다음에 개인전을 하게 되면서 계속 작업을 할 수 있었죠. 그래서, 기본적으로 마감이라는 것이 눈앞에 있으면 무조건 해야 되잖아요. 자신한테 여유를 줄일 수 있는 그런 상황은 아니었고, 일단 어떤 자의와 타의가 반반씩 섞이면서 이건 해야 할 수밖에 없다. 그런 생각이 들면서 작업을 계속 할 수 있게 된 케이스라고 할 수 있을 것 같아요.

이미지 : 외부의 마감이 굉장히 중요하죠. 그러면 그 당시에 주로 선택하셨던 재료들은 무엇이었나요?

정지현 : 그게 이제 이번 전시하고도 비슷할 수도 있는데.

일단 기본적으로 저는 학교 학부 때, 학교 대학생 때도 버려진 물건들을 많이 수집을 했어요. 근데 그게 내가 버려진 물건들을 가지고 작업할 거야,라는 그런 콘셉트를 가진 건 아니었고. 원래 제 학교 지역을 아시겠지만 낙후된 곳이고 상대적으로. 화방도 없었고. 그래서 뭔가 이렇게 작업을 한다 치면, 그림을 그리지 않고서 딴 걸 한다면, 마땅히 구할 데가 없었어요. 그래서 뭐 막대기라도 하나 찾으려면 쓰레기장 같은데, 아니면 가장 만만한 게 특히 무대미술과 같은 그런 이제 폐기장 같은데, 쓸만한 게 어마어마했죠. 그래서 매번 갈 때마다 새로운 것들이 버려져 있는데, 아 이게 별천지인 거예요. 그래서 요즘에 막 제 sns에서 뭐가 새로 올라왔나 뉴스피드 보는 것처럼 뉴스피드 보기 위해 쓰레기장에 가는 그런 상황이 된 거고. 이제 영역을 넓혀가면서, 거기가 청소가 잘 되는 동네도 아니어서, 이게 그냥 뭐 쓰레기장뿐만 아니라 여러 군데에서도 재료가 눈에 보이기 시작하는 거예요. 그러면서 이제 또 물질에 대해서 배우고 분해를 하면서 돈이 될 만한 건 좀 고쳐서 쓰고. 팔지는 않았지만. 아무튼 제가 제 생활에 요긴하게 잘 썼죠. 그래서 이제 작업실도 돌아다니면서, 또 재미난 게 학교에서 나올 수 있는 재료들이 있는 반면, 시장에서 작업실이 됐을 때는 시장 관련된. 한때는 이제 황학 시장 쪽에 있었거든요. 그러고 나서 금천예술공장이라는 데 있었을 때는 또 공장단지에서. 제가 어디에 있느냐에 따라 그 주변에 있는 재료들이 달라지니까. 그러면서 졸업 전시 이런 것도 마찬가지로, 주변에 있는 사물들. 이제 보통은 쓰레기라고 말하지만 저는 이제 쓰레기라고 얘기하진 않죠. 어떤 그런 것들을 가지고 작업을 많이 했던 거 같아요.

MeeJee Lee: That’s right. After this exhibition, how did you feel things had changed?

Jeong Ji-hyun: Well, after graduation, art students usually stop receiving help or care from the school and are left to survive on their own. I consider myself a lucky case, though. After my graduation exhibition, I applied for a project at a alternative space, Sarubia Dabang, and was accepted. Around the same time, I was contacted by a commercial gallery, and I had the chance to hold a solo exhibition. So, by pure luck, I was able to have a solo exhibition within a year after graduation and was able to keep working. Essentially, deadlines play a huge role in this. When deadlines are looming, you have no choice but to keep going. It wasn’t a situation where I could afford to take my time. The pressure from both external and internal factors pushed me to keep working.

MeeJee Lee: External deadlines really are important. So what kind of materials were you using at that time?

Jeong Ji-hyun: It might be similar to the materials I’m using now in this exhibition.

When I was in my undergraduate years, I used to collect discarded objects a lot. But it wasn’t that I had a concept of working with discarded items, it was more practical. The area around my school was underdeveloped, and there were no art supply stores. So, if I wanted to make something other than drawing, it was hard to find materials. To get even something like sticks, I had to go to places like trash heaps, or the easiest place was a kind of set design materials dump, and there were so many usable things there. Every time I went, I found new things discarded, and it was like a treasure trove. It was like scrolling through my social media news feed, but instead, I was going through the trash heaps. Over time, I started noticing materials everywhere. In the areas where I lived, the neighborhood wasn’t well-maintained, and it wasn’t just garbage dumps but various places where materials would appear. While I was learning about materials and how to deconstruct them, I started fixing things that could be useful, not necessarily to sell but to use in my daily life. So, as I moved around different studios, I’d notice different materials based on where I was. When I was in the Hwanghak Market area or at the Geumcheon Art Factory, the materials in the surroundings changed. My work was influenced by the environment I was in. So, for my graduation exhibition, the materials around me—although people typically call them trash, I never did—became the source for a lot of my work.

정지현 : 네. 어마어마한데, 상당히 많이 버렸죠. 많이 버렸지만. 이제 아까 말한 것처럼 돈이 좀 된다,라는 것들은 버리기 아까우니 갖고 있고. 이제 이것은 뭔가 내가 기본적으로 손이 많이 들었고 공이 많이 들었고 애정이 있는 것들은 당연히 가지고 있을 수밖에 없고. 그런데도 불구하고 너무 크거나 무겁거나 하는 옮길 수 없는 것들은, 그리고 그런 것들이 대부분이었고, 그런 것들은 뭐 눈물을 머금고 버려야 할 수밖에 없는 그런 상황입니다.

작품은 적절한 보살핌이 필요하고 사회가 그 공간을 제공하는 게 이상적인데. 이러한 보살핌에 대해 아티스트 주요리가 예술과 사회 서비스의 프로토타입으로 Love Your Depot을 제안했다고 합니다.

MeeJee Lee: So, out of those works, are any of them still around? How do you store them? It looks like there’s quite a lot.

Jeong Ji-hyun: Yes, there were a lot. I’ve actually thrown away quite a bit, but like I mentioned before, if something still has value or I think it could be useful, I keep it. Of course, the ones that I’ve put a lot of work into, or the ones that I have a deep connection with, I naturally hold on to. But, for the larger or heavier ones, especially those that are hard to move, I end up having to let go of them, even though it’s tough. Those were the majority, so unfortunately, some things had to be discarded.

MeeJee Lee: This is actually mentioned in Charles Esche’s text too.

He talks about how artworks need proper care and that it’s ideal for society to provide a space for this care. In this context, artist Jewyo Rhii proposed Love Your Depot as a prototype for art and social service.
