백남준아트센터는 백남준과 그의 동료 작가들의 작품, 그리고 그의 실험적 예술정신을 계승한 동시대 미디어 아티스트들의 작품으로 구성된 소장품을 보유하고 있습니다.
57STUDIO는 백남준의 대표작인 TV 정원, 참여 TV & TV 왕관, 백-아베 비디오 신디사이저, TV 부처, TV 첼로 등 총 5점을 소개하는 영상을 기획하고 제작하였습니다. 이 영상은 백남준아트센터 학예연구사의 글과 해설을 통해 작품의 배경과 의미를 깊이 있게 전달하며, 백남준의 독창적인 예술 세계를 관객들에게 효과적으로 소개합니다.
The Nam June Paik Art Center houses a collection that includes works by Nam June Paik, his contemporaries, and contemporary media artists who carry forward his experimental artistic spirit.
57STUDIO planned and produced a video series introducing five of Paik’s iconic works: TV Garden, Participation TV & TV Crown, Paik-Abe Video Synthesizer, TV Buddha, and TV Cello. These videos provide in-depth insights into the context and significance of the artworks, guided by commentary and writings from the curators of the Nam June Paik Art Center. Through this series, viewers are introduced to the innovative and unique artistic world of Nam June Paik.
백남준아트센터가 소장하고 있는 백남준 작가의 작품 〈TV 정원〉을 소개합니다.
〈TV 정원〉은 관람객들이 백남준아트센터에 들어와 제일 먼저 만나는 백남준의 작품입니다. 기술과 자연의 결합을 보여주는 백남준의 대표작 중 하나라고 할 수 있습니다. 동시에 백남준아트센터에 오시는 모든 분들이 본다는 점에서 아트센터를 대표하는 작품이기도 합니다.
This is Nam June Paik’s TV Garden from the Nam June Paik Art Center’s collection.
TV Garden is Paik’s work that visitors meet first when they enter the center. It is one of Paik’s major works, which represents a merging of technology and nature, and also represents the NJP Art Center, for all of its visitors see this work.
〈TV 정원〉은 다양한 종류의 식물들로 구성된 수풀 사이에 텔레비전들을 배치한 작품입니다. 어떤 텔레비전들은 하늘을 향해 있기도 하고 다른 텔레비전은 비스듬하게 눕혀져 있기도 합니다. 텔레비전 크기도 각기 다릅니다. 작품을 보는 관람객들은 하나하나의 텔레비전 이미지들보다는 나무와 풀들과 텔레비전이 만들어내는 하나의 경관을 감상하게 됩니다.
TV Garden consists of dozens of TV sets lying amidst live plants and bushes of various kinds. Some of the TV monitors face upwards, and others lie on the side slantingly. They are all different sizes. Viewers will see a landscape as a whole created by trees, plants, and televisions, rather than each individual image on the TV screen.
백남준은 이 작품을 1974년에 처음 만들었습니다. 처음 만들었던 〈TV 정원〉은 30대의 모니터로 구성된 작품이었습니다. 이후에 카셀 도큐멘타를 비롯해 세계 여러 곳에서 여러 차례 전시가 되었는데 매번 모니터의 기종이나 수량뿐만 아니라 식물의 종류도 현지 여건에 따라 달라지고는 했습니다.
Paik created this installation first in 1974. The original version was made up of thirty monitors. Each time TV Garden was shown at numerous international art events, including Kassel Documenta, Paik showed various versions with different numbers and models of monitors and local plants.
백남준아트센터는 2008년 개관과 함께 〈TV 정원〉을 관람객들에게 소개했습니다. 백남준아트센터는 현재 세계에서 유일하게 〈TV 정원〉을 상시 설치해 두고 있습니다. 관람객들은 언제든 백남준아트센터에 들러 이 작품을 감상하실 수 있습니다.
The NJP Art Center introduced TV Garden to visitors with its opening in 2008. The center is the only museum in the world to display TV Garden permanently. You can visit the center and appreciate this work at any time of the year.
〈TV 정원〉에는 여러 종류의 식물이 텔레비전과 함께 섞여 놓여 있습니다. 일반적으로 우리에게 테크놀로지는 자연과 상반된 것으로 여겨질지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 이 작품에서는 테크놀로지를 대표하는 텔레비전이 미술관 안에 만들어진 작은 정원에서 식물들과 함께 놓여진 것입니다. 기술과 자연이 하나의 유기체적인 공간을 형성하고 있다고 말할 수도 있겠습니다.
TV Garden presents a mixture of various species of plants and TVs. Generally, we tend to see technology as the opposite of nature. However, in this work, TVs a symbol of technology are placed with vegetation in a small garden created in a museum space. In this way, technology and nature are united to build a common space where they are inseperably connected.
〈TV 정원〉속에서 텔레비전은 하나의 오브제이면서도 그 물질감을 느끼기 어려운 대상이기도 합니다. 여러 수풀과 화려한 영상들 사이에서 텔레비전 수상기는 잘 눈에 띄지 않기 때문입니다. 텔레비전과 자연의 관계에 대해서 백남준 작가는 이렇게 말합니다. “자연 환경의 특성은 영화나 회화보다도 텔레비전에 더 많이 담겨 있다. 사실 텔레비전, 그 미세한 전자들의 임의적 움직임은 자연 자체이다.” 많은 사람들이 텔레비전이 자연에 반하는 사물이라고 생각할지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 백남준은 자신의 작품 안에서 텔레비전이 생태계가 될 수 있다고 믿었습니다. 백남준은 〈TV 정원〉을 통해서 나뭇잎의 초록과 다양한 TV의 전자적 이미지가 하나로 어울릴 수 있는 장을 마련한 것입니다.
In TV Garden, TVs are art objects whose materiality is hard to grasp. This is because they are hardly visible, hidden among various plants and gaudy images. Paik comments on the relationship between TV and nature: “The nature of the environment is much more on TV than on film or painting. In fact, TV (its random movement of tiny electrons) is the environment of today.” Many may regard TV as an object opposite to nature. However, Paik believed that TV could become an ecosystem in his work. Through TV Garden, Paik created a field where the greens of foliage and multiple electronic images of TVs could get along.
〈TV 정원〉의 텔레비전에서 재생되는 영상은 백남준의 대표적인 비디오 작품인 〈글로벌 그루브〉입니다. 1974년에 백남준은 이 작품을 자신이 직접 만든 비디오 신디사이저를 활용해서 제작했습니다. 제목의 ‘그루브’라는 단어가 말해 주는 것처럼 음악과 춤이 활기차게 섞여 있는 작품입니다. 백남준은 비언어적 의사소통 방식인 음악과 춤을 글로벌 커뮤니케이션의 매체로 제시합니다. 〈글로벌 그루브〉에서는 여러 문화 예술 형식의 활기찬 혼재로 ‘지구촌’을 표현했습니다. 작품에 특별한 서사는 없지만 작품을 보는 이들은 영상의 리듬을 단순하고 직관적으로 감상할 수가 있습니다.
The video playing on the screens of the TV sets is Paik’s celebrated work Global Groove. Paik produced this work using his self-made video synthesizer in 1974. As the word ‘groove’ in the title suggests, this video is a lively concoction of music and dances. Paik presents the nonverbal languages of music and dance as a global communicative medium. Global Groove represents a ‘global village’ as an energetic fusion of various art and cultural forms. Viewers can enjoy the rhythm of the image transitions, with no narratives, simply and intuitively.
〈TV 정원〉 속에서 재생 되는 〈글로벌 그루브〉는 관객들로 하여금 자연물과 인공물간의 존재론적 차이에 대해서 다시 한번 생각해 볼 수 있도록 돕습니다. 숲속에서 재생되는 다이나믹한 영상을 보면 자연물과 인공물간의 경계가 불분명하다는 말을 은유가 아니라 실제로 느낄 수가 있습니다. 〈TV 정원〉에서 관람자의 눈은 전자적 자극과 자연의 녹음을 동시에 받아들입니다. 그 과정에서 하나의 화면에 고정되어 있던 시선은 더 자유로워집니다. 그리고 작품이 보여주는 리듬에 따라서 공간을 다시 돌아볼 수 있게됩니다.
Global Groove shown in TV Garden encourages viewers to think again about the ontological difference between natural and artificial things. Watching this dynamic video playing in the bush, viewers realize the obscured boundary between natural and artificial things, not figuratively, but literally. The eyes of the viewers of TV Garden receive electronic stimuli and natural greens simultaneously. In the process, their eyes become freer, no more fixed on a single screen. Moreover, they may even look around the space according to the rhythm of the video.
미술관 안에 구성된 이 작은 생태계에서 텔레비전은 자연을 해치는 테크놀로지가 아닙니다. 백남준이 만들어 내는 전자적 이미지들은 식물과 어우러져서 하나의 풍경을 이루게 됩니다.
In this small ecosystem constructed in a museum, TV is no more a technology that hurts nature. The electronic images created by Paik and plants fit wonderfully into a single landscape.
