“Wrap Around the World” 시리즈는 백남준 탄생 90주년을 기념해 한국국제교류재단이 제작하고, 57STUDIO와 백남준 아트센터가 협력하여 기획한 프로젝트입니다. 이날치, DJ 진욱, 사운드 아티스트 정진화, 보태니컬 디자이너 박소희, 해파리 박민희와 함께 백남준의 평화와 소통의 메시지를 현대적으로 재해석했습니다. 이 프로젝트는 문화적 경계를 넘는 독창적 표현을 통해 현대 사회의 갈등과 분열을 넘어 소통과 이해의 중요성을 강조합니다.

첫 번째 작품 ‘세계와 손잡고’는 1988년 백남준의 위성 프로젝트를 기반으로, 이날치 팀의 공연을 통해 동서양의 조화를 표현하며, 외계의 공격에 맞서는 퍼포먼스로 인류 평화와 화합의 메시지를 전달합니다.

The “Wrap Around the World” series is a project produced by the Korea Foundation to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Nam June Paik’s birth, collaboratively planned by 57STUDIO and the Nam June Paik Art Center. In partnership with LEENALCHI, DJ Jinwook, sound artist Jeong Jin-hwa, botanical designer Park So-hee, and HAEPAARY Park Min-hee, Nam June Paik’s message of peace and communication has been reinterpreted in a modern context. This project emphasizes the importance of communication and understanding, transcending the conflicts and divisions of contemporary society through creative expressions that cross cultural boundaries.

The first piece, “Wrap Around the World,” is based on Nam June Paik’s 1988 satellite project. It showcases harmony between East and West through a performance by the LEENALCHI team and delivers a message of peace and unity for humanity through a performance responding to an alien attack.

Al Franken:  Hello. I’m Al Franken here with some earth shaking news in television history, if not in history itself. I’m standing here in an alien spacecraft hovering a quarter mile or so above our Manhattan broadcast center WNET. I introduce to you now a man, or creature, who tells me he is from the planet Krylon, near Alpha Centauri. He calls himself only Dr. Mobius. Dr. Mobius, why have you chosen this moment in time, this program, to reveal yourself to the world?

Tom Davis(Dr. Mobius):  Human race has become a threat to the other civilizations in the universe. Your virulent nationalism, your ceaseless brutality, your wanton disregard for the needs of your own planet serve as a bad example to young Krylonian minds. And so the purpose of my visit, I’m afraid, is to destroy your species using our death ray.
Al Franken:  Dr. Mobius, I beg you, I believe if you watch our program on your triangular telescreen,
Tom Davis(Dr. Mobius):  Telescreen, yes.
Al Franken:  I think you’ll find ample evidence that mankind is capable of transcending artificial boundaries and communicating in the spirit of brotherhood and peace.
Tom Davis(Dr. Mobius):  Very well. I will watch your program and then decide. But it better be good.

앨 프랭큰: 미스 차? 안녕하세요, 미스 차?
차명희: 안녕하세요 앨, 모비우스 박사님
앨 프랭큰: 네.
차명희: 한국의 ‘리틀 엔젤스’가 선보인 아름다운 공연을 잘 즐기셨기를 바랍니다.
앨 프랭큰: 아름다웠습니다.
닥터 모바우스: 만족스러웠어요, 아주 만족스러웠어요.
차명희: 마음에 드셨나요?
닥터 모비우스: 그럼요.
앨 프랭큰: 아주 좋았습니다. 정말로요, 미스 차.
차명희: 언젠가 한국에 방문하시게 된다면, 신비롭고 훌륭한 동양의 매력을 경험하시게될 겁니다. 어떻게 생각하세요, 모비우스 박사님? 서울에서 인류의 평화와 화합을 기리는 성대한 축제에 함께하시겠어요?
닥터 모비우스: 네, 좋습니다. 알겠어요.

앨 프랭큰:  모비우스 박사님, 이제 주어진시간이 다 됐는데요. 인류에게 남은 시간도 이제 없나요?
닥터 모비우스:  아닙니다. 당신네 행성을 남겨두기로 결정했습니다, 지금 당장은요. 하지만 지구인들, 경고의 말씀을 드립니다. 결정의 시기는 여러분에게 달려있습니다. 선택도 여러분에게 달려있어요. 이제 행성을 그만 파괴할 건가요? 지구인 사이의 무의미한 분열과 증오를 멈추고, 은하계의 지적 생명체로서 책임을 다 하시겠습니까? 아니면, 지금처럼 계속 소멸을 향해 돌진하겠습니까? 결정은 여러분의 몫입니다.

Al Franken:  Well, Dr. Mobius we’ve just about run out of time. Has the human race run out of time also?
Tom Davis(Dr. Mobius):  No. I have decided to spare your planet, for now. But a word of caution to you earth people. The time of decision is upon you. The choice is yours. Will you stop poisoning your planet? Will you cease the senseless divisions and hatredsbetween your peoples and assume your responsibility as intelligent life forms in the galaxy? Or, will you continue hurtling yourself headlong toward obliteration? The decision is yours.
