작업 소개
57STUDIO는 이주요 작가와 큐레이터 김현진이 협업한 주요 퍼포먼스 프로젝트를 영상으로 기록하며, 2016년 문래예술공장에서의 첫 쇼케이스를 시작으로 지속적인 협업을 이어오고 있습니다. 이 프로젝트는 무대장치, 영상, 조명, 사운드를 통해 오브제를 등장시키고 이야기를 전달하는 실험을 통해 퍼포먼스의 가능성을 탐색하는 자리였습니다.
무대의 주인공은 이주요 작가가 과거에 제작한 오브제들입니다. 연약하고 임시적인 구조를 지닌 이 오브제들은 작가의 표류적 삶을 반영하며 여러 장소를 떠돌다가 2007년 폐기 위기를 맞았고, 이를 계기로 큐레이터 김현진과 함께 《십년만 부탁합니다》라는 전시를 기획해 작품들을 위탁 보관하게 됩니다. 십 년이 지난 2017년, 이 오브제들은 다시 무대 위로 올라와 빛과 소리, 움직임과 침묵을 통해 예술가의 삶과 예술작품의 삶 사이를 넘나드는 이야기로 관객과 대화합니다.
57STUDIO는 이 프로젝트의 진화 과정을 영상으로 기록하며, 아카이브 이상의 감각적이고 서사적인 기록을 통해 예술과 삶의 경계를 성찰하는 작업에 동참하고 있습니다.
57STUDIO has documented on film a major performance project collaboratively developed by artist Jewyo Rhii and curator Kim Hyun-jin, continuing an ongoing partnership that began with their first showcase at Mullae Art Factory in 2016. This project served as a site for exploring the possibilities of performance through experiments in which objects appear and narratives unfold via stage sets, video, lighting, and sound.
The protagonists of the stage are objects previously created by Jewyo Rhii. Fragile and provisional in structure, these objects reflect the artist’s drifting life, having wandered through various places before facing the risk of disposal in 2007. This moment led to the planning of the exhibition Please Give Me Ten Years with curator Kim Hyun-jin, through which the works were placed in entrusted storage. Ten years later, in 2017, these objects returned to the stage, engaging the audience in a dialogue—through light and sound, movement and stillness—that moves between the life of the artist and the life of the artwork.
By recording the evolving process of this project on film, 57STUDIO participates in a practice that reflects on the boundary between art and life, offering a sensorial and narrative record that goes beyond the scope of a conventional archive.
