《젊은모색 2019: 액체 유리 바다》전은 국립현대미술관의 전시 프로그램인 ‘젊은모색’의 19번째 전시이다. 1981년 《청년작가》전으로 출발한 《젊은모색》전은 한국 신진 작가들의 실험적이고 도전적인 작품 세계를 조명하며, 국내 동시대 미술의 경향과 잠재력을 예견해보고자 마련되었다. 이번 《젊은모색 2019》전은 미술관 학예사들의 조사, 연구 및 추천과 다수의 회의를 통해 주목할 만한 신진 작가 9명 김지영, 송민정, 안성석, 윤두현, 이은새, 장서영, 정희민, 최하늘, 황수연을 선정하였다.
이번 전시의 부제인 ‘액체 유리 바다’는 서로 다른 주제와 매체를 각자의 개성으로 다루는 참여 작가 9 명에게서 발견한 공통의 키워드이다. 이는 단어 사이의 틈새 같이 완결된 문장으로 매듭지을 수 없고 특정한 개념으로 정의 내릴 수 없는 동시대 한국 작가들의 자유롭고 유동적인 태도를 상징한다. 또한 단단하면서 섬세한 액정유리 같이 현실 안팎의 장면들을 더욱 투명하고 선명하게 반영하는 젊은 작가들의 성향과, 끊임없이 율동하는 너른 바다처럼 미래에도 멈추지 않는 흐름으로 존재하게 될 그들의 가능성을 의미하고 있다.
전시에서 소개하는 9 명의 작가들은 미디어의 이미지, 게임, 브이로그, 스마트폰 앱, 유튜브 등에서 발견한 특성이나 정서를 끌어들여 사회적인 이슈, 시대적인 고민과 정면 대결하기도 하고, 인터넷의 파도에 몸을 맡겨 함께 떠다니기도 한다. 또한 물질과 형태, 신체와 시간, 스크린의 내·외부 등에 대한 탐구를 독자적인 언어로 전개한다. 우리는 이번 전시에서 만나게 될 작가들의 작품을 통해 언제나 새로움을 향해 나아가고, 힘겹더라도 포기하지 않는 작가들의 의지와 마주할 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 이들과 함께 ‘바로 지금’을 통과하고 있는 우리에게 이번 전시가 세대의 물결을 감지할 수 있는 촉매제가 되어주기를 기대한다.
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea presents Young Korean Artists 2019: Liquid Glass Sea, the 19th edition of the museum’s exhibition program Young Korean Artists. First held under the title The Korean Young Artists Biennale in 1981, Young Korean Artists sheds light on experimental and innovative works by promising young artists in Korea, and offers a prospect of the trends and potential in Korean contemporary art. Young Korean Artists 2019: Liquid Glass Sea features works by 9 up-and-coming artists: Keem Jiyoung, Song Min Jung, AHN Sungseok, Yoon Doohyun, Lee Eunsae, Chang Seo Young, Chung Heemin, Choi Haneyl and Hwang Sueyon. The artists were selected based on the research by and recommendations from the curators at the museum, considered over several meetings and selections.
‘Liquid Glass Sea’ from the subtitle of the exhibition are common keywords found in the works by the 9 artists who explore their particular subject and medium in their own distinct personality. As reflected in the gaps between the words, ‘Liquid Glass Sea’ symbolizes the free and flexible attitude of promising young artists in Korea, whose works cannot be summarized in a complete sentence nor be defined through specific concepts. The words also signify the characteristics of the artists, who reflect the landscape inside and outside reality in an even more clear and transparent way like the hard but delicate liquid crystal glass, as well as the artists’ potential to continue to flow in the future like the expansive, endlessly rolling sea.
The 9 artists introduced in the exhibition extract certain properties and sentimentality discovered in media such as images, games, vlogs, smartphone apps and YouTube, sometimes confronting timely social issues head-on, while at other times letting themselves float around in the flow of the Internet space. Moreover, they develop their exploration into matter and form, body and time, and inside and outside of the screen, in their own innovative language. The works in this exhibition testify to the determined outlook and attitude of the artists, who will always continue to advance and never surrender no matter how much challenge comes their way. Young Korean Artists 2019: Liquid Glass Sea hopefully functions as a catalyst that will allow us, passing ‘here and now’ with the 9 artists, to sense the currents of the time.
